Course objectives
This course introduces students to a critical analysis of topics associated with the so-called "post-truth" condition (conspiracies, disinformation, polarisation, etc.).
Learning outcomes
The students: 1. Will understand key processes in contemporary societies 2. Will learn sociological concepts that will help them understand specific problems of contemporary democracies 3. Will learn to integrate interdisciplinary acheivements of social scientific disciplines
Syllabus
  • 1. Modernity, post-modernity, hyper-modernity, post-truth society: A new world, or a new story? 2. Where has trust gone? The crisis of trust and social capital. 3. Crisis of truth, or crisis of expertise? 4. Democracy and emotions. 5. Social media and polarization. 6. Charismatic populism and "tricksters." 7. Media, social media, and moral panics. 8. How to win a hybrid war? 9. Misinformation: To what extent does it affect us? 10. GUESTS: JAN DANIEL & JAKUB EBERLE 11. Conspiracy theories: Resistance, or enchantment of the world? 12. Summary and reflection: Unity in a divided world?

Assessment methods
Students have the opportunity to earn 100 points during the semester. According to the points achieved, the final grade will be awarded as follows: 0-59 points: F 60-67 points: E 68-75 points: D 76-83 points: C 84-91 points: B 92-100 points: A Points can be earned through: 1) Compulsory group presentation (30 points), which students sign up for during the first week of classes and which they prepare on the basis of one of the texts of the recommended literature. The presentation will last 15 minutes. It will consist of 1. introducing and summarizing the content of the text, 2. clarifying the meaning of the text (which allows us to understand), 3. critically evaluating the text. The presentation must not be just a summary of the text. 2) Final written work in the scope of 8ns on one of the topics of the course. The work will present either a theoretical problem, discussed in class, or a sociological analysis of a concrete example of the phenomenon. Students will use at least 4 academic sources, which are not listed in the list of literature in the syllabus, to prepare the thesis. The topic of the thesis must be reported and approved by the teacher by November 20, 2023.
