Course objectives
"If the audience is the measure all things, then art becomes a reflection of sociology and dissecting audience tastes becomes the art." (Rothstein 2000)
The course deals with the sociological analysis of film, understanding contemporary cinema and filmmaking as a key to understanding modern society and social change. It aims to illustrate basic sociological concepts through the analysis of filmmaking, and vice versa.
The course introduces basic sociological concepts to a broad audience in a soft manner. It is open both to students in the sociology program, who will have the opportunity to exercise their sociological imagination in a non-traditional way and to review the knowledge acquired in theoretical courses, and to students in other majors, who will have the unique opportunity to understand that sociology is a living science useful in everyday life.
Learning outcomes
Upon completion of the course, students will be able to use basic sociological concepts to analyze cultural phenomena while viewing film production through a critical and analytical lens. Students will strengthen their sociological imagination, especially their ability to apply sociological concepts to the surrounding reality, whether real or cinematic.
Teaching methods
Contact lessons take place in a block once every two weeks. The block includes a joint viewing of the film and a moderated discussion of it using analytical texts. The teaching includes independent study of the texts for the respective teaching block.
Assessment methods
Evaluation will be based on supervised attendance and ongoing written self-tests.
