Course Enrolment Limitations
The course is offered to students of any study field.
Course objectives
The aim of the course to give the students theoretical background as well as the practical training to apply the participative approach with social work clients into the practice. In the first part of term are discussed the theories and concepts of participative approach. The second part focuses on application this approach into the practice with selected social situation (drug abuse, dependency of older people, childhood). In the third part the students making their own proposal of implementation the participative approach into the practice.
Learning outcomes
Upon completion of the course the student will be able to:
- understand the historical, cultural and international context of constructing a participatory approach;
- understand the context of the application of the participatory approach in social work;
- understand the role of the social worker in the context of the participatory approach in working with clients;
- analyse the possibilities of applying the participatory approach in social work practice;
- analyse the limits and barriers to the application of the participatory approach in social work practice;
- compare the application of the participatory approach in the Czech Republic and other EU countries;
- to propose an argumentative project for the implementation of the participatory approach in social work practice in a selected organisation.

  • The main topics of the course: - introduction, terminology;
  • - citizenship, participation, participative governance;
  • - forms, levels and kinds of participation;
  • - role of social worker into the context of participation;
  • - participative approach in social work with children;
  • - participative approach in social work with people with handicap;
  • - participative approach in social work with older people;
  • - coopertaion, collaboration into the context of participation;
  • - limits of implementation the participative apprach into the social work practice.

Assessment methods
The condition for successful completion of the course is participation in selected seminars, submission of written reflections by the deadline, preparation of an individual project and final test.
