Course objectives
The course focuses on two areas. Firstly, defining the relationship between disability and contemporary society and secondly, introducing the key areas and methods of social work practice. Within the first area, models of disability are a key concept for us. We will use this lens to look at specific types of disability and the Czech context of social work in the course. In the second part, students are introduced to specific ways and possibilities of supporting people with disabilities in different areas of their lives (housing, employment, integration into the local community, support for independence). The aim of the course is then to orient students in the issues of providing social work services to people with disabilities in the contemporary Czech context and to teach them to identify and apply the available support options in different areas of their disability.
Learning outcomes
Orientation of students in the field of social work with people with disabilities, knowledge of basic concepts (models of disability, inclusion, types of disability, objectives of social work). Orientation in the Czech context of social work service provision (Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities vs. support system and Social Services Act) Orientation in the possibilities of support available to persons with disabilities from social policy systems, within social services, as informal resources in the local community. Ability to apply the above concepts to thinking about setting up an adequate type of support for a person with a disability in a variety of specific areas.
