Course objectives
The goal of the course is to acquaint students with selected ethnographic practices that are useful for studying contemporary media ecologies, particularly media professionals and media organizations. The course provides the students with space for testing and practicing their methodological (ethnographic) skills and interests. The course combines lectures and workshops and focuses on the use of diverse concepts of ethnographic methodology and qualitative interviewing in the students' individual projects.
Learning outcomes
After successfully finishing the course, students will:
be versed in basic concepts of ethnographic research and qualitative interviewing;
be able to apply the concepts and related techniques in their own research;
be able to reflect ethical issues of their research and their own researcher's position;
be able to recognize and use elements of participatory research design.
Syllabus
  • Course introduction.
  • Introduction to qualitative methodology; the construction of field.
  • Observation and writing field notes.
  • Shadowing.
  • Qualitative interview.
  • Places, objects, images: Visual analysis and analysis of material culture.
  • Quality as ethics and reflexivity.
  • Analysis; grounded theory, work with analytical software.
  • Current trends in writing about and presentation of media research.

Teaching methods
Lectures, workshops, class discussions, homework.
Assessment methods
Attendance (limit: 4 missed classes).
Weekly very short reflection essays of required readings (10 weeks with required readings = 10 times 0, 2 or 4 points = up to 40 points in total).
Four practical assignments (field notes, a qualitative interview, a self-reflexive text, a creative presentation of the project) -> 0, 5 or 10 points for each assignment = up to 40 points in total.
Closing oral discussion-based exam testing the acquired knowledge (up to 20 points).
You need to gather at least 66 points to successfully finish the course.
