Course objectives
The aim of the course is to provide students with basic orientation in local and community journalism. It offers information on typology, history and aspects of the current functioning of local and community media. The planned content of the course is focused on the theoretical approaches to the functioning of this type of media and journalism; on gaining practical experience in the production of journalistic texts for this type of media; and on practical information about the local and community media and their resources.
Learning outcomes
Student will be able: to understand the typology, history and recent development and apects of local and community media; to learn rountines in the local and community media newsrooms (during excursions to selected media, press conferences or municipality meetings); to gain overview about Czech local and community media landscape; to learn the basic theories concerning local and community media operation; to understand media laws and ethical norms concerning local and community media operation.

  • 1. Introduction to local and community media topic. 2.-3. History of local and community media (above all after the year 1989 in the Czech Republic). 4.-9. Recent development of local and community media. 10.-11. Specifics of local and community journalism. 12.-13. Laws and ethical norms.
