Course objectives
The aim of the course is to provide students with basic orientation in editorial practice, not only in print and online media, but also knowledge of editorial, production and dramaturgical activities in radio and television; at the same time, to teach the practical skills needed in the process of editing and producing media content. The course introduces students to the process of editing and production of news and features as a comprehensive and complex logical operations. The complexity of the course is based on the requirements of the application sphere, as elaborated in the market analysis.
Learning outcomes
Students will be able: to manage the evaluation and classification of information and to judge their relevance and to distribute them for further processing; to assess the relevance of the topics and their inclusion in the media agenda; to plan the structure and content of printed and online media and radio and television news and publicistic programs; to independently edit the news and feature stories. The student will know the basic principles of creating printed and online media design and will be able to independently design the layout and create a newspaper page. The student will master the basic production and dramaturgy activities across various media types and will be able to co-ordinate the entire process of editing a printed or online news, as well as a television or radio news program.
Syllabus
  • 1. Introduction to the issue of editorial work and production and dramaturgy activities - basic concepts. 2. Gatekeeping, news values, agenda setting etc. 3. Organization of editorial work, role / function / position typology and tasks of individual editorial team members (according to the given media type). 4. Newsroom: architecture, typology (according to the given mediatype). 5. Editorial / production system in the editorial office. 6. Acquisition, evaluation and processing of information. 7. Content planning. 8. Editing of news and feature stories. 9. Design (layout) and structure of newspapers, magazines and news websites. 10. Working with photos and graphics. 11. Specifics of editing and production of news and publicistic audiovisual programs and formats. 12. Legal and ethical aspects of word, sound and image processing.

Teaching methods
Lecture is focused at teoretical explanation, seminar is focused at class discussion, group projects, presentations by professionals in the sector and editorial skills training.
Assessment methods
Students will prepare at least two partial practical-oriented written assignments focused on the individual phases of the editing, production or dramaturgy and the final written seminar paper or project. The credit will be awarded for all tasks when the minimum score is reached for the total score.
