Course objectives
Cílem předmětu je seznámení s publicistickým žánrem reportáž a jeho modifikacemi a formáty, se zaměřením na psanou reportáž, a to z hlediska teoretického i praktického. Předmět je zaměřený i na současnou praxi a podobu psané reportáže a její kontext a reflexi. Studenti se seznámí také se sumou znalostí a dovedností nutných k tomu, aby byli schopní tvořit nejčastěji používané druhy reportáží, jako je zpravodajská, publicistická, sociální či investigativní na odpovídající profesionální úrovni. Předmět je zaměřený především na praktické dovednosti a jejich nacvičení.
Learning outcomes
Upon completion of the course, the student will:
- know the constitutive characteristics of reportage as a genre and the essential stages of its development in the context of Czech journalism;
- be able to distinguish between different formats and types of reportage;
- be able to choose the appropriate procedure and genre for the treatment of a given topic;
- be able to write basic types of news and journalistic reportage;
- be able to critically reflect on the genre of reportage;
- have an overview of the current state of Czech journalism with a focus on reportage and development trends.
Syllabus
  • Main topics:
  • 1. - 2. Introduction, definition of basic concepts and genre of reportage.
  • 3. Opening the report, how to engage the reader.
  • 4. Methods and practices of reportage writing, context, author's approach.
  • 5. News reporting.
  • 6. Short news report in the field.
  • 7. Social reporting.
  • 8. Short social report in the field.
  • 9. Investigative report.
  • 10. War reportage.
  • 11. Difference between written and audiovisual reportage.
  • 12. Conclusion, evaluation and discussion of the work.

Teaching methods
Theoretical readings, practical exercises, group discussion, analysis and critical reflection of texts, home seminar papers, fieldwork. Creating a media product.
Assessment methods
During the semester, students must submit one seminar paper - an analysis and comparison of selected reports, one news report, a report from any chosen city/village, a social report and a final report on any topic.
Credit will be awarded if he/she submits 80 per cent of the prescribed papers, i.e. four out of five, in a pass mark. If the instructor grades the paper as unsatisfactory, the student may rewrite the paper and resubmit it for evaluation.
