Course objectives

The course is designed as a practical workshop. The aim is to motivate students to be professionally interested in the Czech language and to underpin the knowledge they acquired in their previous studies. Also: to deepen and supplement their knowledge through intensive trainings. Each session entails editing specially created texts (each concerning a specific point of grammar) followed by joint analysis of the given subject. Intermediate tests (games) verify – through repetition and revision – students’ knowledge throughout the entire term. After a certain area has been learned, the teacher evaluates the tests and students thus obtain feedback. Students work with basic codifying reference works during the course. The conditions for successful completion of the course are a student’s active participation (long-term absence is not allowed), successful completion of the intermediate and summary tests, passing of the final test + successful completion of the seminar assignments. All the written materials make up the study documents (students must use them to prepare for the final test). The complexity of the course is based on the requirements of the application sphere, as elaborated in the market analysis.

Learning outcomes

During the course students will deepen the knowledge of the grammar and style of the contemporary Czech language and intensify their training. They will thus be able not only to produce language-quality (not only journalistic) texts but also to make their proofreading.

Syllabus

• Introductory lesson: familiarization with the content of the course and conditions of passing; familiarization with the manuals and other resources they will use; standard language, usage and codification; entrance test and its analysis. Second hour: capital letters; writing words taken over; exercise on s / z; phenomena associated with nouns; treacherous words. Third lesson: repetition of past; adjectives and pronouns; noun and adjective match; capital letters a second time. Fourth hour: punctuation; escalation of adjectives and adverbs; numerals and their spelling; capital letters for the third time. Fifth lesson: punctuation in a simple sentence; match of subject and predicate; treacherous words and other spelling pitfalls; summary repetition with evaluation in the next lesson. Sixth hour: summary repetition evaluation; punctuation in compound sentences; infinitive and the verb být; treacherous spelling phenomena; inflection of foreign names. Seventh hour: other punctuation marks (period, colon, semicolon, question mark, exclamation mark, three periods, parentheses, slash, quotation marks and direct speech); punctuation in compound sentences; semantics of some words. Eighth hour: sentence and testimony; word order; current sentence structure and use of the question; misdemeanors; verb and noun phrases. Ninth hour: condensation and decondensation of the text; deviations from sentence structure; selected problems or meeting of grammar and stylistics. Tenth lesson: complex sentences and phrases; abbreviations, marks and titles; selected typographical questions. Eleventh lesson: introduction to administrative skills - writing, linguistic and polite; selected typographical questions; at the end of the repetition. Twelve lesson: final comprehensive test.

Teaching methods

Frontal (explanation), text exercises and homework, cooperative and discussion.

Assessment methods

During the semester, homework and preparation is required, in the form of several, about four five, written assignments . Active participation in the course is also required: a maximum of two unexcused absences. Each meeting includes text tasks + in some meetings there are partial homework assignments; students get acquainted with the result of homework at the following meetings.
