Course objectives
The purpose of this course is to offer students an insight into the main features and events of the foundation stage of the communist regime, i.e.the first period of the communist totalitarian rule, spanning from February 1948 to the end of 1955. The seminar focuses on the contemporary media and the most important political trials of the era and their analysis. The subject will also include a survey of the key sources, archive fonds and media banks in the libraries of the Czech Republic. The seminar will partially cover the problem of historiographic methods along with the methods of media analysis. The course is designed as thirteen 2-hour lessons combining both the form of a lecture and a seminar.
Learning outcomes
After completing the seminar, the students will be able to characterize the main features of the foundation period of the communist regime and the nature of the media of this period. They will have knowledge and understanding of the significant events of the era and will be capable of defining the power structures as well as the repressive organs of the state. The students will be able to describe the main political trials and their representatives, including the details of the Slansky trial. The students who have completed the course will have no difficulty enumerating the main resistance groups of this period and their key figures. They will master the basics of the historiographic method. They will gain a deeper insight into the quantitative content analysis and discoursive analysis. The course will develop the participants’ awareness of the structure of archival and library and information institutions in the Czech Republic, including the fonds related to the research of the history of the media.

Teaching methods
The main teaching methods will include lectures, group discussions, and essays, with particular emphasis on creativity and team work.
Assessment methods
The participants will be required to complete individual tasks that will become an integral component of their overall assessment. In the course of the seminar, the main topic and the students’ contributions will be subjected to group discussions.
