Course objectives
History of mutagenesis, types of mutations. Origin of spontaneous mutation. Tautomerization, deamination of DNA bases. Role of DNA repair, replication, and recombination. Induced mutations. Radiation-induced mutations. Biological effects of UV radiation. Consequences of thinning of ozone layer. Biological effects of ionizing radiation. Sources and types of ionizing radiation. Radiation-induced DNA damage. Factor controlling biological effects of radiation. Biological effects of magnetic field. Chemical mutagenesis and chemical mutagens. Classification of chemical mutagens. Molecular basis of mutagenesis induced by physical and chemical mutagens. Promutagens. Metabolic activation of promutagens, plant promutagens, animal promutagens. Pharmacological polymorphisms. DNA damage and repair mechanisms (fotoreactivation, excision repair, postreplication repair, SOS repair). Error prone and error free DNA repair, adaptive repair. Antimutagens. Classification of antimutagenic compound. Mechanisms of antimutagenenesis. Environmental mutagens and carcinogens. Method for genetic risk assessment.
