Course objectives
At the end of the course students should be able to understand and explain animal breeding principles and distinguish differences among farm animal species in breeding. Students should be able to apply genomic selection knowledge in further studies in this actuall questions. Based on acquired knowledge, student should understand practical problems in animal breeding. Understand how to characterize the best animal for breeding purposes.
Syllabus
  • 1. Genes, genetic markers and genetic maps of farm animals.
  • 2. Genetic linkage between genetic markers.
  • 3. Basic principles of animal breeding.
  • 4. QTL mapping methods and its practical improvement.
  • 5. Breeding value (BV) and estimation of breeding value (EBV).
  • 6. Genomic selection and genomic estimated breeding value (GEBV).
  • 7. Breeding methods in dairy, beef and combined cattle breeds.
  • 8. Breeding methods in pigs and another farm animals.
  • 9. Field trip on bulls rearing house
  • 10. Field trip on breeding boars farm
