Course objectives
Overview of clinically significant microscopic fungi and fungi occurring in the environment, such as food and feed, on the walls of flats or in the air. Etiology and pathogenesis of fungal diseases. Major producers of mycotoxins. Morphological characters and their importance for species determination. At the end of the course students should be able to:
name microscopic fungi of medical importance;
apply specific methods for the isolation and cultivation of clinically significant microscopic fungi;
evaluate the morphological features of individual taxonomic groups important for species identification;
explain effects of mycotoxins on human health.
Syllabus
  • Current systematic arrangement of microscopic medically important fungi; methods of isolation, cultivation and determination of micromycetes, ascomycetous yeasts (candida), Aspergillus, Mucor, Fusarium; fungal infection – definitions and therapy; antifungal drugs; mycotoxins of microscopic fungi and their significance.
