Course objectives
The main aim of the course is to provide students with basic knowledge of: basic groups of microorganisms - viruses, bacteria, Archaea, Fungi; structure and function of virion; the structure and function of prokaryotic cells; differences in bacterial and archaeal cell constructions; eukaryotic microorganisms; growth and multiplication of microorganisms; nutrition of microorganisms; energy metabolism of chemothophs and chemolitothrops; phototrophic microorganisms; fundamentals of genetics and molecular biology of microorganisms; microbial communities; the importance of microorganisms in the environment; industrial use of microorganisms; the most important taxonomic groups of bacteria, archaea and fungi; microorganisms as agents of infectious diseases.
Learning outcomes
Students should be able to understand the fundamental aspects of: 1) structure and function of prokaryotes and microbial eukaryotes; 2) interactions among microorganisms and between microbes and other organisms and the environment; 3) significance of microbes in evolution, environment, health and disease; 4) application of microorganisms in biotechnology.
