Course objectives
The purpose of the course is to provide information about basic histological methods and the types of tissues in the animal organisms.
Learning outcomes
At the end of the course students should be able to understand the basic histological methods (sample preparation, staining methods); to characterize the basic types of tissues in the animal organism; compare the various systems in selected invertebrates and vertebrates.
Syllabus
  • Methods used in histology (tissue preparation, staining procedures). Comparison of light and electron microscopy.
  • Epithelial tissue (structure, function, cell polarity, classification, localization)
  • Connective tissue, cartilage, bone (structure, function, localization).
  • Muscle tissue (skeletal, cardiac, smooth muscle, structure, function, localization).
  • Nerve tissue (structure, function, localization).
  • Comparison of the various systems in selected invertebrates and vertebrates. Cardiovascular system; digestive system; respiratory system; urinary system; integumentary system; reproductive system
