Course objectives
The aim of the course is an explanation of common regularities of growth, control, and inheritance of growth in humans in ontogeny. Principles of skeletal growth and common theory of growth. Excessive and low weight. Clinical applications. Problems of evaluation and interpretation of auxological data. Secular changes.
Learning outcomes
At the end of the course, students will understand the dynamics of growth of a child with respect to the genetic determination. Development of proportionality of a child and synchronization of developmental processes.
Syllabus
  • 1)growth and its determinants, interindividual and intersexual variability of growth
  • 2)primáry aspects of growth – ossification and growth of bones of postcranial skeleton, skeletal morphogenesis
  • 3)common theory of growth, Utah paradigma
  • 4)hormonal regulation of growth
  • 5)genetic conditionality of growth, heritability, genetic growth potential, constitutional variants of growth, predictive procedures
  • 6)Evaluation and interpretation of auxological data, growth curves – types, construction, description, growth spurts
  • 7)dynamics of growth, alometric and izometric growth, growth of somatic parameters, changes in body proporcionality
  • 8)biological age, korelates of skeletal age
  • 9)ontogenetic development of child, synchronisation of developemntal proceses
