- Course objectives
- Aim of the course is to introduce student to history of most common deseases that suffered historical populations and animal (selected deseases). At the end of the course will be student able to recognise on skeletal remains some diseases of bones, teeth and mummified tissues. The course is desirable especially for students of anthropogenetics, anthropology, archeology, forensic medicine and related specialities.
- Syllabus
- 1.Introduction to paleopathology - definition of the field of knowledge, perspectives of paleopathology, methods paleopathological survey
- 2.Inherited anomalies and dysplasias - malphormations of individual parts of skeleton, developmental deviations of skeletal system, congenital anomalies of joints
- 3.Degenerative–produktive deseases – arthritis, spondylosis, DISH
- 4.-6. Trauma and artificial interferences – fractures, dislocations and luxations of joints, trauma caused by weapons or sharp instruments, intentional deformations of skeleton and mutilations, trepinations, scalping, cauterisation, amputation, deadly injuries at administratition of law justice
- 5.-7. Nonpecific inflammations – acute and chronical ostheomyelitis, aseptic inflammation of bones (revmathoid arthritis, Bechtěrev desease, psoriatic arthropaty)
- 6.-8. Specific infalmmations – tuberculosis, syphilis, leprosy
- 7.-9. Most frequent infection diseases in past – plague, cholera, smallpox, infantile paralysis
- 8.Tumors – benign (osteoma, chondroma, fibroma, myoma) and malignant (osteosarkoma, hemoblastses, bone metastases of malinant tumors).
- 9.Skeletal displays of anemias(cribra orbitalia), metabolic ostheopaties (scurvy, rachitis, ostheoprosis, gout)
- 10.Endocrinal osteopaties – hypophysar disturbances in grouwth, hyperparathyroidism, frontal internal hyperostosis
- 11.Unclassified ostheopathies – mycoses and diseases similar to mycoses, Harris lines, Paget desease, juvenile thoracic kyphosis, Legg–Calvé–Perthes–Maydl desease
- 12.Mummies, inner and parasitic deseases – types of natural mummies, anthropogenic mummification, deseases found in mummies.
- 13.Deseases of teeth and dental alveoles – methods of study of dental caries, dental atrition, inflamations, hypoplastic changes of teeth tissues, orthodontic anomalies, pathology of mandibular joint.
