Course objectives
This course connect plant ecology (typical host) with ecology of fungi and microorganisms (the most common pathogens). Relations between hosts and parasites are analysed, including their interactions and dependence on environmental conditions. Based on the introductory general part, particular cases of the most important plant pathogens (mainly of cultivated plants) are described in the second part of the course.
Learning outcomes
At the end of this course, the student is able:
- to describe the infection process and its relation to environmental conditions, predispozitions of the pathogen and options of host defense;
- to identify common diseases of local cultivated plants.
Syllabus
  • 1. Plant pathology - basic terms. Historic background. Plant disease - classification, spectrum of biotic agents. 2. Biotic relationships - pathogenicity. Infection process. 3. Reaction of host on infection agent - basic terms. Resistance, susceptibility, tolerance, type of resistance. 4. genetic aspects of host-pathogen relationship. Infection process of pathogens, disease resistance of host plants, methods of determining disease resistance. 5. Environmental factors influencing host-pathogen relations. 6. Epidemiology. Basic methods of plant protection. Pathometric methods. 7. Diseases of cereals. 8. Diseases of potatoes and sugarbeet. 9. Diseases of leguminous plants. 10. Diseases of vegetables. 11. Diseases of fruits. 12. Diseases of of forest trees.
