Course objectives
The main topics of this lecture are: the applied effect of microorganisms on the environment (soil, water, air, extreme environment), their influence on human activity and health, biotechnological applications of microorganisms and methods of environmental microbiology.
Syllabus
  • Introduction in environmental microbiology. Microorganisms in the environment (viruses, bacteria, fungi, algae and protozoa). Terrestrial environments. Aeromicrobiology. Aquatic environments. Extreme environments. Biogeochemical cycles and their influence on the environment. Biodeterioration. Microorganisms and organic pollutants. Microorganisms and anorganic pollutants. Microorganisms in sewage treatment. Microorganisms in agriculture. Methods of environmental microbiology (microskopic, physiological, imunological, DNA-based). Environmental sample processing. Indicator microorganisms.
