The course is also offered to the students of the fields other than those the course is directly associated with.
fields of study / plans the course is directly associated with
there are 9 fields of study the course is directly associated with, display
Course objectives
The course is follow-up of the course in Bi6120 Plant explants, in which students are familiar with various methods in vitro cultivation. Expands knowledge towards applications of biotechnology   these methods for obtaining natural products available for pharmaceutical use ("Pharming"), food and cosmetic purposes, the preparation of edible vaccines, remediation. Part of the course will focus on GMOs higher plants with resistance to pests, diseases or adverse external influences. Lectures give the overview of methods used in preparation of transgene plants including the most recent methods (e.g. synthetic promotors, CRISPR).
Learning outcomes
After this course, students will be able:
- describe main methods used in plant genetic modifications
- summarize the possibilities of biotechnologically obtained plants (agriculture, "pharming", food and cosmetic industry, edible vaccines, remediation etc.)
- describe new methods of genome editing (e.g. synthetic promotor preparation, CRISPR)
- analyze profits and risks of modern plant biotechnologies
