Course objectives
The practical course accompanies the lecture Mechanisms of cell death, significance, methods. Within the two six-hour-blocks students will have an opportunity to practically learn and perform several selected modern methods of apoptosis detection using flow cytometry and microscopy. Specifically, students will have an opportunity to learn multiparametric analysis of the activation of selected specific molecules (active caspase-3) and events (changes in plasma membrane summetry, phosphatidyl serine translocation) involved in cell death regulation. Moreover, these will be studied simultaneously in combination with analysis of other important cellular processes such as cell death progression (total DNA content, propidium iodide staining), DNA damage (gamma-H2AX phosphorylation) and cell viability (specific probes). Students will be provided with information how to evaluate the results obtained, interprete the data, and get practical recommendations about the application of individual methods, their advantages, disadvantages, and limits.
Learning outcomes
The students will be able to use independently several methods for apoptosis detection, and evaluate and interpret the results obtained.
