Course objectives
Understanding the technology of mintage alloys manufacturing and technology of mintage itself is one of the key aspects when choosing the best way of mintage material treatment and can be helpful at analysis interpretation as well. Mintage alloys composition and homogenity can vary significantly even in the same coin batch and in a short period. In consequence there can be a different resistance to corrosion. Moreover there can be found a rather significant number of counterfeit coins originating from the same time. To choose the best way of mintage conservation we have to take into account all of these aspects and the goal of the lectures is to make students familiar with the issues.
Syllabus
  • Mintage metals and their alloys, specifics, defects, corrosion. Manufacturing and processing of mintage alloys, effect on material metalography. Final treatment and effect of mintage itself on a material structure. History of mintage. Mintage manufacturing defects influencing composition, quality and corrosion resistence. Counterfeit coins from the same period, main technological processes of production. Mintage material analyses and their correct interpretation. Mintage conservation and cleaning - effects on composition and structure of material.
