Prerequisites
Chemistry at secondary school level
Course Enrolment Limitations
The course is also offered to the students of the fields other than those the course is directly associated with.
fields of study / plans the course is directly associated with
there are 7 fields of study the course is directly associated with, display
Course objectives
At the end of the course, students should be able to perform and routinely apply the following common calculations which are necessary for the basic work in a biological laboratory: Mass-to-mass, volume-to-volume and mass-to-volume ratio, molar amount, molar concentration, dilution of solutions, pH calculations of strong acids and bases, pH calculations of weak acids and bases, pH calculations of salt solutions and buffers and their combinations.
Learning outcomes
At the end of the course, students should be able to routinely perform the common calculations which are necessary for the basic work in laboratory.
Syllabus
  • 1. Introduction, organization of the course, conditions of the credit. 2. Repetition of basic chemical relationships from the secondary school. 3. Mass-to-mass ratio, volume-to-volume ratio, mass percentage, volume percentage, mass-to-volume ratio. 4. Test. 5. Molar amount. 6. Test. 7. Molar concentration. 8. Test. 9. pH calculations of strong and weak acids and bases. Dissociation degree of weak acids and bases. 10. Test. 11. pH calculations of salts of weak acids and their conjugated bases, of salts of weak bases and their conjugated acids, pH calculations of buffers. 12. Test. 13. Evaluation in the regular completion.
Teaching methods
One lesson of seminar followed by a test after one week. The literature for home studies is well available.
Assessment methods
Requirements to obtain the credit: (i) The presence on introductory lesson and on electronic tests is mandatory. In the case of illness (or other serious reason of absence), a letter of excuse (by a physician in the case of illness) must be showed and accepted at study department to excuse the absence. The presence in seminar lessons is strongly recommended. (ii) 5 tests in a computer room. The credit in regular completion date will be given if the student obtains at least 75% of points in all five tests in total. The credit in a rest date will be given if the student obtains at least 75% of points in a reparatory test (knowledge from the whole course will be examined), the participation in a reparatory test will only be allowed if the condition of presence on introductory lesson and on electronic tests is passed.
Language of instruction
