The course is offered to students of any study field.
Course objectives
The lectures aim to discuss the basic principles of traditional and modern biotechnology and the fundamentals of processes used in bioreactors for the technological utilization of the metabolic activity of organisms and enzymes.
Learning outcomes
After completing the course, a student will be able to:
- describe the biosystems used in biotechnology
- describe the microbial and enzymatic kinetics in bioprocess
-describe basic biotechnological operations and processes in bioreactors
- summarize the principles of bioprocesses and their application in traditional and modern biotechnology
Syllabus
Introduction to biotechnology and historical survey. Biosystems - microorganisms and other biocatalysts. Diversity of biosystems - appearance in technical environments. Cultivation conditions - environmental and media parameters. Enzymatic and microbial kinetics of bioprocess. Bioreactor types and their components. Batch, fed-batch, and continuously operating bioprocess. Measuring principles - physical, chemical, and biological parameters. Traditional biotechnology – beer, wine, cheese production. Modern biotechnology – bioremediation, biomining, biogas, biofuels, bioelectricity.
