Course objectives
The aim of this course is to give information to students about basic knowledge of modern neurobiology with special focus on molecular basis of psychiatric diseases.
Syllabus
  • 1. History of neurosciences: histology, physiology, phrenology, functional anatomy, pharmacology, genetics, molecular biology, molecular psychiatry, psychology 2. Neuron, nervous system, anatomy of CNS: neuron, glial cell, CNS, peripheral nervous system, brain. 3. The development of neural system, functional neuroanatomy: neural plate, embryonal induction, BMP, stereotropism-resonance, growth cone, functional asymetry of bran hemispheres, Wernicke center, Broca center, Brodman, Penfield, Ojeman, Posner, motivation, Papez, emotions. 4. Memory: types of memory, experiments of Penfield, patients of Brenda Milner, hipocampus, amygdala, experiments on Aplysia, Kandel and Nobel price 5. Neurotransmitter systems and psychopharmacology: Glycine, glutamate, dopamine, serotonin, noradrenalin, acetylcholine, endogenous opioids, GABA and their receptors. Psychopharmacs and their influences on CNS. 6. Methods of the research of the brain: neuroimagining methods, CT, MRI, SPECT, PET, EEG, molecular psychiatry, DNA chips. 7. Molecular psychiatry – schizophrenia: symptoms and diagnostics, simplex, paranoid, hebephrenic and catatonic, neuroimagining studies, dopaminergic hypothesis, neurodevelopmental hypothesis, autoimmunity hypothesis, theory of sleeping lesion, genetics, molecular basis of schizophrenia. 8. Molecular psychiatry – affective disorders, classification, symptoms and diagnostics of affective disorders, manic episode, depressive episode, neuroimagining studies, monoamine theory, gabaergic theory, genetics and molecular basis 9. Molecular psychiatry – alcoholism and ADHD: dispositions to the alcoholism, social factors, psychobiologic factors, genetics, molecular studies, ADHD and symptoms and diagnostics, neurobiology of ADHD, neuroimagining studies, genetics, molecular basis. 10. Molecular psychiatry – Alzheimer disease, sexual behavior: Alois Alzheimer, incidence of Alzheimer disease, risk factors, senile plaques, symptoms, diagnostics and the treatment, genetics, molecular basis, sexual differentiation of the brain, testosterone, estrogens, masculinisation of the brain, protective hypothesis, alpha-fetoprotein, transsexuality, Schwaab research, homosexuality, nature-nurture?
