Course objectives
The course aims to review the basic organic chemistry and structural biochemistry concepts and incorporate them into a secondary school curriculum. Much attention is also paid to the practical relevance of the information.
Learning outcomes
The student will be able to prepare correct lesson plans. The student will be able to evaluate and use various sources of information critically.
Syllabus
  • 1. Structure of organic compounds. Classification of the organic reactions and their description. Oxidation and reduction in the organic chemistry. Isomerism. Nomenclature of organic compounds.
  • 2. Alkanes and cycloalkanes. Conformations and reactions of the saturated hydrocarbons.
  • 3. Unsaturated hydrocarbons and their reactions.
  • 4. Arenes, properties, and their reactions.
  • 5. Organohalogens, their properties, syntheses, and reactions.
  • 6. Alcohols, phenols, and ethers - properties and their reactions.
  • 7. Carbonyl compounds, their properties, syntheses, and reactions.
  • 8. Carboxylic acids and their functional derivatives.
  • 9. Organic derivatives containing sulphur and nitrogen. Organometallic compounds.
  • 10. Lipids.
  • 11. Heterocyclic compounds and naturally occuring compounds.
  • 12. Saccharides - properties and their reactions.
  • 13. Peptides - their structure and function.

Directed instruction (Lecturing that includes time for guided and independent practice).
Assessment methods
Each topic is concluded by a computer-based test (ROPOT in IS MU). To pass the course, the students must score 60% or more on average.
