Course objectives
The aim of the subject is to provide an overview of the basic chemical disciplines and calculations that should be safely known in the further study of environmental chemistry.
Learning outcomes
Student will be able to understand basic chemical calculations, and apply them in tasks related to environmental chemistry and other environmental sciences.
Syllabus
  • 1) Introduction. Unit conversion.
  • 2) Amount of substance, its definition, formulation and use. Mass and volume.
  • 3) Mixtures and their composition. Formulation of concentration: Molarity, molality, mass concentration, ratio. Mixing, diluting, concentrating aqueous solutions.
  • 4) Ideal gas law. Gaseous solutions. Partial pressure.
  • 5) Chemical equations and their balancing. Limiting reagent.
  • 6) Acidity and basicity. pH. Thinking on logaritmic scale. Calculation of pH in aqueous solutions. Strong and weak acids and their salts.
  • 7) Equilibrium and its constants. Ka, Ks, pKa, pKs. Distribution diagrams. Buffers.
  • 8) Distribution coefficients.
  • 9) Thermodynamics. Steady state, comparing the states. Spontaneity, enthalpy, entropy.
  • 10) Kinetics. Zero, first, and pseudo-first order processes.
  • 11-13) Recapitulation and practice of problematic chapters.
  • 14) Final test.

Teaching methods
Solving exercises jointly in front of the blackboard, with occasional demonstrative solution.
Assessment methods
Credit is given at the end of the semester for either getting at least 50% points from each test during the semester, or at least 50% from the final test.
