Course objectives
The main objective of this class/exercises is to acquire the practical experience and skills necessary for the planning, preparation and implementation of the whole process of assessment of health and environmental risks.
Learning outcomes
At the end of this course, students should be able to:
- practical use prospective and retrospective human and environmental risk assessment methods (windows PC)
- apply toxicokinetics of the main exposure routes (oral, inhalational, dermal, dietary exposure)
- solve a practical case studies with risk quantification from define exposure scenarios.
Syllabus
  • Introduction and selection of case studies (all students)
  • Practical PC calculations - examples: hazard identification, dose - response relationships, exposure analysis, risk characterization.
  • Toxicokinetic models, carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic risk assessment calculation – software applications.
  • Sensitivity analysis, Exposure Factor Handbook, probabilistic assessment - Monte Carlo approach.
  • New database sources (toxicology, effects, biomarkers; exposure parameters, intakes).
  • Ecological and environmental risk assessment - practical examples (equations).
  • Case study finalization (all students will have original study subject).
Literature
    recommended literature
  • FJELD, Robert A., Norman A. EISENBERG and Keith L. COMPTON. Quantitative environmental risk analysis for human health. Hoboken, N.J.: Wiley-Interscience, 2007, xiii, 390. ISBN 9780471722434. info
    not specified
  • WEB based data-bases (during exercises)
Teaching methods
A practical case study solution will be continuously carried out on a PC (SW, by each student). These Exercises will take place in a computer lecture-room. All students will have original case study subject.
Assessment methods
Knowledge will be evaluated by using of model examples calculated by students during the whole semester. Students must realize practical case study with risk quantification from define exposure scenarios (Individual Case Study).
