Course objectives
The formal basis of the microscopic theory of condensed systems derives from very general conceptions. This course touches only some. The physical questions addressed relate to systems violating the ideal periodicity of crystals and to states out of thermal equilibrium. 1. Summary of the band structure formalism 2. Resolvent of self-adjoint operators: an excursion into functiona analysis 3. point defects in crystals: bound and scattering states 4. Surfaces and interfaces: Surface Green's function 5. Equilibrium Green's functions: basics 6. Equilibrium correlation functions and observable characteristics 7. Disordered systems and their electronic structure: general questions 8. Coherent potential and related approximations 9. Equilibrium and non-equilibrium Green's functions 10. Techniques for non-equilibrium GF 11. Various approaches to quantum transport 12. Quantum transport far from equilibrium
