Course objectives
The course complements the courses of economic geology by adding the basics of the best theory and practice in building, evaluating and analyzing exploration/production projects. The purpose of the course is to provide the students with the knowledge and practical skills vital for a start of the career either as a consultant or a project team member within commercial entities in the Czech Republic and abroad. The lecture series will focus on how to determine the input parameters of a project (reserves, production, price and relevant costs) within the existing legislation frame. Special attention will be paid to the risk management of important project variables. Principles of project economic and business evaluation using standard international techniques will be covered. The course will be finished by completion and presentation of a simple commercial project prepared either by an individual or a small group of students.
Learning outcomes
Upon successful completion of the course the students will understand the principles and basic requirements of building exploration and production projects within the existing legal framework and business risks.
They will also be able to determine and defend technical and economical input and output parameters of projects.
Special skills acquired during the course include ability of expert discussions on project parameters, especially evaluation methods of the reserves volume and categories, details of the production of natural resources and economic parameters of the project.
Syllabus
  • Mineral resources industry in the historical and international context.
  • Types of ownership and access to mineral resources and reserves, and their historical evolution.
