Course objectives
The aim of course is to extend the essential knowledge of petrography upon the field of technical substances, which have the character of "technical rocks". The course gives the essential information about material composition, chemical properties and microstructures of raw material mixtures and about the final products of inorganic production procedures. These materials are investigated by the same methods as the natural rocks.
Syllabus
  • 1) Overview of technical substances and their classification. Research methods (DTA, X-ray, Electron scanning microscopy and microanalysis, optical microscopy, cathodoluminescent methods, fluorescence, etc.) 2) Glasses inclusive of water glasses, technology, noxious agents, colouring admixtures, dating. Heat resistant substances (dinas, fireclays, magnesium and chromium-magnesium products, graphite products, silicon-carbide products). 3) Ceramic substances: overview of ceramic raw materials and their primary properties: chemical properties, microstructures, mineral composition, mixing of substances...... 4) Building ceramic: brickmaker and building ceramic products, earthenware, porcelain, porous products, clayware. 5) Microstructures of ceramic potsherd defects of ceramic products. Pigments, glazes, enamels. 6) Mortars and plasters historical methods of lime production, technology, chemical composition of mortars and plasters, optical analysis an its importance. Gypsum mortars. 7) Influence of clinker composition to the properties of cement. Concrete stone - composition, bonding agent, stones, reactions, microstructure, dating. 8) Scorias - mineral composition, chemical composition, modifications and exploitation of scoria stones. 9) Ashes and fly ashes 10) Asbestos materials 11) Anthropogenic minerals 12) Artificial minerals and rocks.
