Course objectives
1) An introduction to microtectonics, its importance for the analysis of strain history, an explaining of the basic terms (strain geometry, important variables, fabric symetry, rheology, deformation maps) 2) Mechanisms of deformation: cataclasis, fluid transfer, twinning, solid-state diffusion, disclocation creep, recovery, dynamic recrystallization, superplasticity, annealing. Main deformational regimes. 3) Methods of microfabric analysis - thin sections, SEM, TEM, fluid inclusions, preferred orientations - LPO, SPO, image analyses, experiments 4) Deformation of carbonates - mechanisms, the origin of foliations, LPO, analytical methods 5) Practical problems and their interpretations
