Course objectives
Petrogenesis of main types of sedimentary rocks: Gravels, conglomerates and breccias.
Sand and sandstones.
Fine-grained clastic sediments (mudstones).
Carbonate rocks.
Other sedimentary rocks: cherts, phosphatic sediments, iron and manganese-rich sedimentary rocks, organic carbon-rich sedimentary rocks.
Syllabus
  • Petrogenesis of main types of sedimentary rocks:
  • Gravels, conglomerates and breccias (orthoconglomerates, paraconglomerates), intraformational conglomerates; volcaniclastic coarse-grained sediments. Conglomerates -origin, composition and provenance.
  • Sand and sandstones. Primary and secondary textures and structures. Classification of sandstones, sediment maturity. Interpretive petrology of sedimentation areas. Diagenesis of sandstones. Genetical models of sandstones (quartz sandstones, arkoses, graywackes, graywacke-sandstones, volcaniclastic sandstones).
  • Fine-grained clastic sediments (mudstones). Mineral and chemical composition of clay sediments, textures and structures. Basic types of mudstones (residual clay sediments, redeposited clay sediments - continental, marine and hybrid forms). Petrogenesis of siltstones.
  • Carbonate rocks. Composition of rock-forming carbonate minerals, textures and structures. Depositional environments and limestones. Carbonate diagenesis. Genetical classification of the limestones. Dolomite and dolomitization.
  • Other sedimentary rocks: cherts (classification, composition and origin), phosphatic sediments, iron and manganese-rich sedimentary rocks, organic carbon-rich sedimentary rocks.
