Course objectives
The exotic igneous rock What are lamproites, carbonatites, theschenites and kimberlites? Classification and nomeclature of the lamprophyre, carbonatite, theschenite and kimberlite clans. Identification and nomenclature of closely related rock types. Global distribution, igneous associations. Field geology and petrology - Macroscopic and microscopic description. Cognate mineralogy. Whole-rock geochemistry: major and minor oxides, CIPW normative composition, trace elements. Inclusion suites: macrocrysts, xenocrysts, xenolists etc. Plutonic and volcanic equivalents. Nature, origin and evolution (differentiation) melts. Petrogenesis of individual magma-types. Economic geology.
