Course objectives
The course will combine a theoretical approach to geochemical processes that influence the quality of the environment with practical demonstrations of the results of remediation measures that have been taken so far. The field demonstrations will be delivered using the experience of local experts from industry, civil authorities, and academia.
Syllabus
  • Lecture Part

    Lecture Block I: Scope, aim and schedule of the course; Natural resources of the Czech Republic; Geology and Environment in the Federal Republic of Germany; Natural and anthropogenic contamination of soils: Arsenic in geosphere

    Lecture Block II: Coal combustion and waste management (Chvaletice, Radvanice), solid waste management (Příbram); Sampling strategy, Samples laboratory processing

    Lecture Block III: Water-rock-atmosphere interaction - key process of environment formation; Weathering of rock and minerals: Principles (acid-base and redox reactions); Human output to the atmosphere - acid rain; Carbonate and iron - key systems in stabilizing environment conditions. Acid rain drainage (Jizerské hory); Acid mine drainage (Rožínka, Chvaletice); Principles of Risk Assessment

    U-processing plant, waste pond, remediation

    Rožná - Olší: U-mine waters, environmental impact on Hadůvka creek

    Radvanice: Burning coal heap, remediation

    Trutnov: Fluidised bed combustion power plant Poříčí

    Stráž pod Ralskem: U-mine in situ underground leaching, remediation

    Jizera mountains: Dead forest, remediation, Al-rich surface waters

    Mokrsko: Au ore deposit, arsenopyrite weathering - environmental impact

    Příbram: Kovohutě - scrap lead processing

    Chvaletice: Power station with classical combustion; fly ash pond, Fe-Mn mine: acid mine drainage

    Electron microscopy and microanalysis (solid samples)

    X-Ray diffraction (solid samples)

    AAS (waters)

    Sequential extraction - AAS (soil samples)

    Preparation of project presentation (6 team projects)
