Syllabus
  • Light absorbing metal complexes and organic dyes that have several stable redox states and a reasonable lifetime of excited states are potential photoredox catalysts. Taking typical photoredox catalysts, such as ruthenium-tris-bipyridine, iridium-trisphenylpyridine, eosine Y and riboflavin, as examples we will discuss the key parameters for their successful use in the photochemical conversion of organic substrates. In many cases the photoinduced electron transfer is coupled with a proton transfer. This allows the reduction of otherwise too difficult to reduce compounds and may lead to efficient synthetic processes. A very fruitful synergy arises from organocatalysis and photo redoxcatalysis leading to enantioselective photoreactions. We will discuss recent examples from our lab and the literature.
