Course objectives
Ass. prof. Abdul Shaban, Ph.D, je vědeckým pracovníkem renomované university Tata Institute of Social Sciences v Mumbaí (Bombay), Indie. Vystudoval geografii na Džaváharlál Néhrú University v Dillí a regionální rozvoj na Indickém technologickém institutu v Mumbaí. Zabývá se problematikou ekonomického a sociálního rozvoje ve vztahu k rozvoji měst a městskému pánování, konflikty ve městech, vztahem rozvoje, životního prostředí a klimatických změn, otázkami nuceného přesídlení vyvolaného rozvojovými projekty a kvantitativními metodami (ekonometrie, GIS). Je autorem knihy „Mumbai: Space, Crime and its Political Economy“. Přednese dvě přednášky 1. Urbanization and Urban Transformation in India - pondělí 12.5.2008 od 17:00 - místo bude upřesněno Although India has only about 30% of her population living in urban areas, in terms of size it is huge, about 300 millions. The disproportionate growth of larger cities has created unprecedented concentration and polarization of population and wealth. India’s urban planning, in terms of a balanced approach towards dispersal of economic activity and deflation of swelling population away from a few „economically strategic“ mega cities, has by and large been a non-starter. The global forces and private interest in the recent years have further accentuated the concentration of wealth and economic activities in major cities. 2. Urban Conflicts and Crimes : A Case of Mumbai City - úterý 13.5.2008 - bude upřesněn čas i místo Indian society has traditionally been divided on the basis of class, caste and religion. Ironically, the globalization and neoliberal practices have further accentuated these divides. The city spaces are divided into „our“ and „their“ areas. The delinquency areas in the city are highly related with areas of marginalized sections and floating population. The areas of marginalization and neglect are the breeding grounds of „underworld“, which refuses to die.
