Course objectives
To equip students to successfully apply the English language to all higher academic functions and to prepare students for international engagement.
Learning outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, students should be able to: * Make sound academic judgement of their own and others’ written academic work * Be familiar with the principles of writing compelling academic English * Be able to work iteratively to improve written texts * Be able to give and receive professional feedback * Be able to write collaboratively * Reflect on their own development as learners

  • Academic Writing * Conciseness * Paramedic and reverse paramedic methods * Active and passive voice * Adding Emphasis * Sentence variety * Paragraphs and paragraphing Visual Rhetoric * Using fonts with purpose Graduate Writing * Introduction to graduate writing * Graduate writing topics * Style * Editing and proofreading * Organisation and structure
Literature
  • The presumption is that students will research and choose their own literature. The course will provide context-setting and other supportive resources
Teaching methods
The course is organised on the basis of experiential learning, a form of autonomous learning. Under the teachers guidance, students present their work for collegial critique and feedback. The principles of writing compelling English are added iteratively to the same work each week. It is highly recommended that students present their real-life writing for critique and feedback. At the end of the course, there is a short collaborative writing exercise.
Assessment methods
Evaluation is by active class participation and a collaborative writing exercise.
