Course objectives
(i) Provide exposure to the full breadth of research areas in Molecular and Cell Biology (ii) Provide enough depth to allow undergraduate students to attend and understand MU Life Science seminars (iii) Emphasize the value of basic research for addressing problems of human health and disease
Learning outcomes
(i) Students acquire a basic knowledge of the structural and functional properties of cells (iI) Students have an appropriate overview of various fields and style of experimentation (iii) Students are exposed to research areas they may have not previously considered for their thesis work or Master’s studies
Syllabus
  • Molecular cell biology is an integrative science that brings together biochemistry, biophysics, molecular biology, genetics, and computer science. Students will discover the chemical foundations of the cell, protein structure and function, and basic molecular mechanisms using modern visual tools illustrating the most important structures and processes to facilitate even greater intimacy with the secrets of life. The course will provide graduate-level instruction on molecular and cellular biosciences with special focus on critical thinking and problem solving. The instructor plans on entertaining numerous questions from the audience and part of the grade will be based on in-class participation. Familiarity with basic genetics, biochemistry and molecular biology is assumed knowledge for this course.
