Course objectives
Slovakia is not only a state adjacent to Czech Republic. These both states are also interconnected by shared heritage (historical, cultural, political, demographical and others). The aim of the course is to introduce students to the comprehensive geographical overview of the territory of Slovakia, including its geology, relief, climate, hydrology, demography, settlement structure, transportation, regional disparities and development and many others.
Learning outcomes
The student will master the physical geography of Slovakia as well as the main features of the development of society and economy, including identical and different features in demography and transformation of the economy. He is acquainted with protected areas and with development preconditions fixed in the territory of a neighboring state.
Syllabus
  • Introduction: Territory of the State. Geographical situation of the Slovak Republic. Structure and Relief. The Climate of the Slovak Republic. The Hydrology: Soil Geography: The Biogeography. Protected Natural Territories. The development of population. Urbanisation of Slovakia, changes in settlement structure. The development of economy, the level of industrialisation, its problems and prospects, industry after 1989. Natural background and the development of Slovak agriculture, the disribution of agriculture, the transformation and the privatisation of agricultural production. General characteristics of the transport, natural and economic background for tourism and recreation. Economical regions of Slovakia, new administrative division.

Teaching methods
Lectures, e-learning and seminars. During the course, students prepare and present (individualy or in groups) their own research projects aimed at the selected geographical aspects of Slovakia.
