Course objectives
The objectives of the course are following:
- to introduce students to the theoretical debate on the nature of geographical phenomena and the subject of geography;
- to explain major theoretical conceptions of a region in geography;
- to link particular concepts of region to evolution of modern geographic thought;
- to present the settlement system of the Czech Republic, its hierarchical structure, and its development;
- to explain processes moulding and changing the settlement system;
- to explain and practically demonstrate usage of methods of regionalisation.
Learning outcomes
By passing out the course, students will be able:
- the understand major theories of spatial organisation of society;
- to define and discuss major conceptions of a region in geography, and to link those conceptions to particular theoretical approaches;
- to understand processes changing system of settlement in the Czech Republic;
- to delimit a particular functional region in the Czech republic, and to analyse its internal structure;
- to find data and to know how to use them.
Syllabus
  • 1. Co je to region? Základní teoretické koncepce regionu (tradiční, vědecké a konstruktivistické koncepce regionu).
  • 2. Regionální geografie a regionalizace. Regionalizace ve vývoji geografického poznání. Kritika prostorové vědy. Albertovská škola.
  • 3. Elementy a komplexy. Místo geografie v klasifikaci věd. Hledání pravidelností v geografické realitě.
  • 4. Proces územní koncentrace, jeho vývoj, měřítková diferenciace a regionální variabilita.
  • 5. Urbanizace a rozvoj hierarchické organizace systému osídlení. Funkční diferenciace a specializace středisek.
  • 6. Měřítkové úrovně systému osídlení ČR. Zásady vymezování funkčních regionů. Vymezení pracovních regionů.
  • 7. Modely prostorových interakcí. Vymezení obslužných regionů. Komplexní regionalizace.
  • 8. Regionalizace na subregionální úrovni. Hodnocení vývoje regionální struktury. Představení výsledků provedených regionalizací.
  • 9. Metropolizace a metropolitní regiony. Typologie metropolitních regionů a jejich role v sídelním systému.
  • 10. Polycentrické sídelní uspořádání, koncept polycentrického regionu a regionalizace.
  • 11. Použití regionu v plánovacích politikách. Současný diskurs regionu v plánovací praxi.
  • 12. Kritika regionalizačních přístupů. Alternativní přístupy k organizaci prostorových sídelních vztahů.
  • 13. Funkční regiony a územně správní členění. Reformy územní veřejné správy.

Teaching methods
The course consists of lectures and seminars. In lectures, theoretical-methodological issues are explained, processes discussed and concrete methods introduced. In seminars, the methods are applied by students to distinct sets of empirical data. Moreover, each student is asked to compile a seminar work in which s/he delimits the functional region of a particular micro-regional centre within the Czech Republic, and analyse its internal structure.
Assessment methods
Two short literary reviews, three empirical tasks, and a seminary work (delimitation of functional micro-region of a chosen centre). The final exam has written form.
