Course objectives
The aim of the course is a comprehensive presentation of climate change and climate variability and their consequences for the next development of the Earth landscape with a particular attention to homogenisation and statistical analysis of climatological series, the study of spatiotemporal variability of the climate based on instrumental records, documentary sources and proxy data, effects of climate-forming factors, developing of climate scenarios, climate projections and climate impacts.
Learning outcomes
At the end of this course, students should be able: to explain climate variability and climate change including their consequences for further development of the Earth landscape in the context of the published IPCC documents; apply obtained theoretical knowledge for solution of practical projects on the field of climate variability and change; evaluate methodology of construction of climate scenarios; apply scenarios for the study of climate impacts on the nature, man and human society; apply software AnClim for homogenisation of long-term climatological time series; analyse statistical structure of these series; synthesize knowledge about climate variability and change.

  • Lectures: 1. Climate variability and change 2. Quality of climatological data 3. Homogenisation of climatological series 4. Statistical analysis of climatological series I 5. Statistical analysis of climatological series II 6. Climate fluctuations in the instrumental period 7. Climate fluctuations in the historical period 8. Palaeoclimatology 9. Climatic extremes and their impacts 10. Climate-forcing factors I 11. Climate-forcing factors II 12. Climatic scenarios and their creation I 13. Climatic scenarios and their creation II 14. Impacts of climate change Seminars: 1. Instroductory information and assignment of presentations. 2. Software for homogenisation and analysis of climatological series. 3.-4. Testing of relative homogenity and homogenisation of climatological series. 5.-6. Statistical analysis of climatological series. 7. Atmospheric re-analyses and their use in climatology. 8.-10. Physical basis of climate change and climate projections according to the last IPCC report (AR6 Synthesis Report). 11.-12. Observed and expected impacts of climate change according to AR6 Synthesis Report. 13. Conclusions of CoP 2021 in Glasgow.
