Course objectives

The course is focused on the presentation of cartography and its products, especially old maps, atlases, and globes, in the space-time context. In particular, important old maps and atlases that have influenced cartographic production in the past are presented. The aim of the course is also to lead students to study, analyze, criticize, and use old cartographic materials using modern technologies. Along with the care of preserving these monuments in the end, they will gain an overview of the important collections of this source material. Part of the course is an excursion to a selected map collection.

Learning outcomes

Student will be able to:
- describe the evolution of cartography in space and time;
- understand all important parts of cartographic heritage;
- use and apply the modern methods of map archiving.

Teaching methods

Lectures and practical lessons. In case of interest, block teaching focused on practical examples of old maps can be carried out after the end of the semester.

Assessment methods

The course ends with an oral exam, in which the student demonstrates knowledge of the development of European and non-European cartography, demonstrates the ability to work and use old maps and atlases as data sources. If personal participation in the exam is not possible, exam can be performed remotely.
