Course objectives
The goal, of course, is to introduce students to freely available software and data from areas of geographical information systems. This course should not persuade students that "open-source" is the only right philosophy. The aim is to extend the portfolio of software that students are familiar with and show solutions for using GIS, data making and managing, and for doing spatial analysis in the situation, when it is technically or economically possible to use commercial software.
Learning outcomes
At the end of the course, students will be able to various freely available software - databases, desktop GIS, analytical tools, etc. - and combine them to allow basic analysis and map-making. Students will also know freely available sources of spatial data.
