Course objectives
The aim of the seminar is to deepen the understanding of order in complex systems and its role in creation of autonomous agents. To that end the book "Investigations" by S. Kauffman is "read" and discussed.
Learning outcomes
At the end students will have deeper understanding of behaviour of complex systems.
Syllabus
  • The seminar is based on the book "Investigations" by S.Kauffman. Each seminar will cover a particular theme, will be directed by one of the participants. Directing a seminar involves presenting a 30-40 minute introduction to the topic, and directing the subsequent discussion. The number of participants is limited. There are no formal prerequisites. Syllabus: Prolegomenon, The Origins of Life, Autonomous Agents, Propagating Organization, A Physics of Semantics?, Emergence and Story, The Nonergodic Universe, Candidate Laws for the Coconstruction of a Biosphere, The Persistently Innovative Econosphere, A Co-constructing Cosmos?, Epilogue
Teaching methods
seminars and class discussions on the chapter of the book
Assessment methods
The course has a form of a seminar. Students are evaluated according to their performance during the course. There is no final examination.
Language of instruction
