Course objectives
This course is an introduction to the basics of the work with writing systems, scripts. It is focused on the methods and principles which lead to the creation of more complex script compositions according to artistic principles. At the end of the course students - will know how to realize kerning; - will be able to elaborate the composition of more complex writing systems; - will improve their abilities to manualy reconstruct writing systems; - aquire the practical knowledge in using various computer tools.

  • Lower-case letters' arrangement.
  • Type unit composition.
  • Placing of letters on a surface.

Teaching methods
Work in studio: Assignment, consultation, working on the assignment (usage of graphic software and manual conceptual work on paper), assignment completion. Students constult the assignment with teachers and take their remarks in account. Final presentation of the projects in a digital form and paper drawings.
Assessment methods
Colloquim asessment based on finished manual projects and partial presentation of digital projects.
