Course objectives
The course is an introduction to environmental science with emphasis on basic principles of sustainable development, especially in the field of IT. At the end of this course the student will be able to:
understand and explain the principles of phenomena related to the environment;
basic way to describe the normal functioning of ecosystems;
use information relating to the environment, which are encountered in everyday life and work, to make decisions in private life and profession;
understand the legislation related to the environment;
understand the impact of economic mechanisms on environment and economic environment protection measures;
analyze the main requirements for IT technology to be environmentally friendly
Syllabus
  • Environment and the environment protection (basic concepts)
  • Components of the environment: water, air, ground, nature and landscape, row materials, wastes
  • Global environmental problems (climat changes, population explosion, reduction of biodiversity), sustainable development, Agenda 21
  • The private and state sector roles in environmental protection
  • Economic aspects of the environmental protection, globalization of the world economics
  • Macro- and microeconomics of the environment, economic stimuli for environmental protection, systems for environmental management, environmental accounting and taxes
  • Microenvironmentalistics - ecology of households and workplaces, agreements of good neighbourship
  • Environmental information, freedom of access to environmental information, public participation in environmental issues
  • Environmental impact of information technology

Teaching methods
Lectures on the foundations of the environmental sciences with discussion and reflection using modern educational technology. Individual student's work on essays.
Assessment methods
For a successful completion of the course, active participation in form of 2 individual essays is required. The topic and extent of the essays is predefined by the teacher (introductory essay) or chosen by the student at the end of the term (final essay). Finally, the colloquial exam mainly concentrates on the topic of the 2nd essay.
