Course objectives
Having completed the course, the students should have a general insight into the main areas of general linguistics. At the end of the course students should understand the basis of linguistics and be able to start studying particular branches of linguistics in detail. They will especially be acquainted with basic linguistic terminology and essential streams of linguistics and their representatives. Throughout the semester students are encouraged to link theory in the classroom to practice at schools via practical tasks.

Student:
- is oriented in the area of basic general linguistic concepts
- has a knowledge of significant linguistics schools, their representatives and concepts
- masters essentials of the historical development of English
- understands English-Czech linguistic contexts
- can bring theoretical linguistically oriented knowledge into future pedagogical practice

Teaching methods
Theoretical input presented by the teacher, followed by a discussion and practical illustrations or examples. Teaching methods: classroom discussions, lectures, students' presentations, home assignments, home projects, observations.
Assessment methods
Credit test at the end (structured tasks - gap filling, multiple choice, open questions, matching). Tests passmark: 70%.

FOR ONLINE SEMETSER: Students are requested to secure good internet connection in order to participate in online lessons as indicated in the schedule. Students must attend these meetings with both the sound and camera on.
