Course objectives
'Grammar A' is an advanced course summarising and developing the students' knowledge of English grammar. Its inseparable part is also theoretical background since students are expected to be familiar with essential linguistic terminology. The course is based on 'A Student's Grammar of the English Language' by Sidney Greenbaum and Randolph Quirk, and other study materials (see below). The course covers chapters 2,3 and 4 - terminology and the English verb.
Syllabus
  • 1. A general framework (terminology)- Sentence and sentence structure, Words and word classes. 2. Verbs and auxiliaries - Full verbs, Primary verbs, Auxiliaries, Modals. 3. The semantics of the verb phrase - The passive voice, The subjunctive, Tenses. Assessment methods (in Czech)
Requirements: 1. Attendance - if possible students should attend all seminars, if they are absent they are expected to keep up with the group 2. Preparation for seminars - independent, regular work on the topics based on the study materials. 3. Active participation - Ss are expected to be able to explain the main points and take part in the practice activities. 4. Moodlinka tests - done at home 5. Mid-course test 6. Final credit test
