Course objectives
Grammar B is an advanced course summarising and developing students' knowledge of English grammar. This course follows the course Grammar A and has the same format. It focuses on the other main word classes, i.e. nouns, pronouns, adjectives, adverbs and prepositions (verbs were covered previously in Grammar A course). The seminar work involves discussing the particular topic with the use of the examples from the handout as well as students' own examples, exercises from the Worksheet, S. Chalker's Workbook and Grammar I. by R. Povolná.
Syllabus
  • The course is based on 'A Student's Grammar of the English Language' by Sidney Greenbaum and Randolph Quirk, namely chapters 5,6,7 and 9 (chapter 8 is left out - it will be covered in syntax). Plan: Topics 1 - 6: Nouns (determiners, number, gender, case); Topics 7 - 9: Pronouns (personal, reflexive, possessive, relative, interrogative, demonstrative, indefinite); Topics 10 - 12: Adjectives and adverbs (functions and classification of adjectives and adverbs, comparison of adjectives and adverbs); Topic 13: Prepositions.
